Learn the Viking Runes: Raidho
Raidho is the Viking rune that looks like the letter R. In fact, some researchers believe that Raidho’s shape was directly based on the Latin letter. Raidho means safe journey, as well as riding, as in riding a horse. Raidho is also associated with the journey toward being a better person, and is emblematic of an individual whose actions are in alignment with what they say they believe.
Understanding Raidho: Excerpts from the Rune Poems
Traveling on horseback was a common Viking experience. We see this referenced in all three Rune Poems, where the relevant verses all begin with the word Riding.
In the Old Norwegian:
Riding is said to be the worst thing for horses;
Reginn forged the finest sword.
In the Old Icelandic:
Riding is of sitting a blessing
and swift journey
and horses toiling.
In the Anglo-Saxon:
Riding seems easy to every warrior while he is indoors
and very courageous to him who traverses the high-roads
on the back of a stout horse.
What Does it Mean When Raidho Appears in a Rune Reading?
To understand Raidho, imagine riding a horse as it confidently strides along. The act of putting one step in front of the other is the best way to cover many miles. When Raidho appears in a rune reading, examine your daily routine. Are the choices you’re making the best for your emotional, physical, and social well being? Are you living the life you want to live? Raidho reminds us to not just go with the flow but instead be mindful of the habits we choose to keep.
Raidho is also strongly associated with self-improvement. You’ll hear the words planned change in reference to Raidho, which is very different from Hagalaz’s sudden, destructive change. Raidho reminds us that we can build a better future by improving the way we live every day.
